You Set Your Affection
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2
The definition of affection is a state of having one’s feelings or emotions acted upon or affected in some way; an attitude or mood in the mind. It is whatever is important to us, that’s where our heart (focus) is. The Law of Focus states what we focus our attention on increases, grows and expands. Thoughts, images in our mind, feelings connected to our thoughts and what we say will manifest as reality. Placing the things of the earth as first priority hinders our focus on Jesus. God instructs us to focus on Jesus Christ to release the provision of His Word so we can prosper in all we do.
‘Set our minds’ means to make a firm decision about how to handle a situation and stay on that direction. It means we see clearly that the things above are in us by the Holy Spirit. Our power is in the choice of our affections. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33.
Our focus is seeing the Holy Spirit as the excellency of our power; He in us; His fruit in us and His power in us (I Corinthians 4:7). We often make the topics of lack, fear or illness important. Our responsibility is set our affections on God’s Word, not on the world’s system. We will not be able to make this choice until we first decide to separate ourselves from being worldly-minded, asking God to make His desires our desires (Psalm 37:4).
‘Things above’ is an uplifting mental and emotional outlook knowing God’s provisions are available by faith. Faith is seeing what God sees. It’s choosing His way even when things look differently in the natural. With the revelation of Jesus Christ in us by the Holy Spirit, we can decide what to focus on. When we see the perfection of Jesus Christ, it is projected upon our lives with total provision and continuous supply.
‘Not on things on earth’ means not being circumstance controlled, problem conscious or allowing blame. A high level of living is being Spirit-led and Spirit-controlled. The law of faith is always faith first, feelings second. We should not wait to feel something to experience the Holy Spirit’s provision.
The story of the woman with the issue of blood is a perfect example of faith first. Faith lead her to wholeness, feelings second (Mark 5:25-34). Deep within her was a spirit calling for healing, keeping her in a seeking attitude. The woman heard about Jesus and realized Him as her source for healing. She said, “If I touch but His clothes, I shall be well!” When she pressed through the crowd to touch His garment, she was immediately healed. This woman had great faith and courage to defy the laws of man and to press forward to get to Jesus; she knew what she wanted. She teaches us how to walk in faith and not give up.
“That I may cause those that love Me to inherit substance, and I will fill their treasures.” Proverbs 8:21. Our first treasure (priority) is developing a Holy Spirit consciousness. The more we focus on Him, the stronger He becomes in our awareness. God promises to fill our treasures. He increases Himself in our awareness so we stop thinking He is a feeling. Lack, limitations, fear, pain, guilt and shame (negatives) are products of a fearful self-consciousness. To develop our true position in Christ we need to come to a place where there is nothing to overcome. As our awareness becomes more fixed on God and experiencing His abundance, the more negatives disappear and the fewer things we have to overcome. Thank you God for meeting my needs according to Your riches in glory (Philippians 4:19). I live in my gifted position and I am victorious over all of life!
