Decree Life or Death?
"Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways." Job 22:28
"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life or death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live." Deuteronomy 30:19
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." Proverbs 18:21
Job's friends gave him advice that he never asked for as they attempted to give him reasons for his suffering. Although Job's friends had the wrong attitude toward him, they still made some great faith statements; "to decree a thing" is one of them. When we understand that it is done to us according to how we believe, we will start to decree a thing and know it will be established in our future (Matthew 8:13, Mark 11:23).
It is important that we have a working definition for the word decree which is the same as declare; it is to make known or state clearly. Decree is a rule of law issued by a head of state; it is a command that is set forth by a person of authority and power; it must be followed by those under the decree. In Biblical times, the King had authority to make decrees. The decree was a written document that was specific and clear concerning the subject matter. It was the law and had to be carried out according to the King's wishes; failure to obey the decree was punishable. We, as believers, have the power and authority to make a decree and expect it will be carried out because of Jesus Christ. Words that we speak will be established (manifested, revealed, shown to be true) as we have spoken them.
The decree that is declared is a faith action coming out of your mouth in a positive, present-tense way based on God's Word. It is saying that we already have what we are expecting to have. We decree, affirm or declare a thing out of our mouth, it goes into our ears and activates the Holy Spirit to perform the word of faith. Faith comes by hearing God's Word (Romans 10:17). The power of decreeing is one of God's greatest designs to predict and design our future. It establishes God's Word in our belief system that becomes a magnet for His abundance.
In the beginning of my ministry, church services were held at the Civic Center in Waterloo for five years. I loved it, but one day I began to feel disconnected. God has a way of revealing change to us by boredom, disappointment or by something that appears wrong. Don't try to escape those feelings, rather ask the Holy Spirit for revelation; it could be God's call for change. We decreed that God had the perfect place for us, wrote it down and agreed to speak it seven times a day (seven means completely done). One day I was in the food line at a funeral and someone told me about the Skyroom in the Black's building. For the next two years it worked perfect for our church services.
Eventually, a discontented feeling of wanting to move and have our own building became very strong. We agreed to speak seven times a day that God had the perfect building with the perfect supply of money. The next day building sites became available for viewing, discovering the property we now own. Nothing happened until we began speaking it!
Decreeing a Thing
1. It keeps our focus on God's Word and the things that are possible. Otherwise, our focus will drift back to our circumstances and what seems impossible.
2. It calls forth the power that is already in us. The fruit of the Holy Spirit is strengthened in us, as us, by decreeing or affirming.
3. It begins to cause things to show up that otherwise we have missed; it is a powerful door opener.
4. It is a builder of our abundant future, our health, our finances and it causes our life to have meaning.
5. It is a way that keeps our hopes alive, no matter what things look like or how they feel.
We are made in God's image and He has given His name and authority to rule and reign in our domain by the power of our words. What we believe and speak is what we will become. That is why it is important to declare God's Word until we totally accept what He says about us as truth. His Word is always the truth and that is what we want established in our lives. We decide what we want our life to look like, then start decreeing it as the king/queen that we are! Just as God spoke the world into existence, we can use our words to speak and decree our world into existence according to Job 22:28. Know that you have the right to legislate and cause change to come based on the power and dominion that God has given you. Decree your victorious future and watch it manifest before your eyes!
